What are Hangnails?
Hangnails are torn pieces of dried skin or cuticle that are
between the nail and the finger.
The hangnail can become very painful and can lead to infection if not
properly removed.
Proper nail care for both fingernails
and toenails can prevent hangnails as well as the pain that goes along with them.
The most beneficial prevention for hangnails is moisturization;
using lotions daily will help prevent the dried split off skin from catching and ripping the live skin it is
attached to.
Hangnails that are ripped from the
fingernail or toenail can become inflamed, infected or become susceptible to a fungal
infection.
Fungal infections can be difficult to
cure once it sets in and if not treated correctly or immediately can require treatments such
as ZetaClear, Funginix or Healing Natural Oils.
Stringent treatment as well as prevention of further fungal
infections will then be required to prevent additional fungal infections once the fungus sets
in.
Keeping your fingernails and toenails clean and dry as well as
moisturized are all important steps to proper nail health.
How many times have we slid our hand into a glove only to be
halted by the intense pain of our skin ripping as it catches on the glove.
Whether the hangnail is caused from our cuticles becoming dry and
tearing from the nail bed, which in itself is painless, or whether we have bitten our nails to the point of
tearing the cuticle; the hangnail takes life skin with it.
The ripping of the live skin is the source of the pain when the
hangnail catches on our clothing, gloves or blankets.
As the live skin is irritated it can become inflamed and if
untreated can become infected. Restraining yourself from biting your nails as well as keeping your cuticles
from drying out will prevent a hangnail from occurring.

Picking and pulling at the hangnail pulls live skin that is
attached to the nail bed up creating an open wound that leads directly into the nail
bed.
This can create a painful infection as well as creating a
breeding ground for nail fungus. If a fungal infection occurs within the nail bed it is difficult to treat as
the nail it self will protect the fungus from treatment. Proper removal as well as prevention of a hangnail
is crucial to nail health.
The hangnail should be clipped with a pair of sharp nail scissors
or clippers and not pulled out. Clipping the hangnail with prevent it from catching on your clothing, gloves
or blankets and pulling the live skin.
Preventing hangnails is generally as simple as using lotion or
hand cream regularly paying special attention to the cuticle and not biting your nails or
cuticles.
Most hand creams and lotions will be sufficient in keeping the
hands and cuticles moist enough to prevent hangnails.
If however, your cuticles continue to become dry and split
creating hangnails natural oil such as sunflower oil can be rubbed into the cuticle several times a day. This
will keep the skin soft and healthy.
